Beware of Scams on Cyber Monday

Everyone loves the buzz of getting a good bargain. However with Cyber Monday becoming the biggest day of the year for online sales, it also a big draw for criminals who are trying to con you out of your money or personal banking details. Cyber Monday falls on November 28th this year. Below are some tips and advice on how to avoid being scammed.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the internet’s version of Black Friday where online retailers will offer amazing deals at the start of the Christmas shopping season. This year sales on Cyber Monday are expected to reach $3 billion in the US.

No doubt there are lots of great deals out there on Cyber Monday but it is also a time when scammers try to lure unsuspecting online shoppers to give over their credit card details.

The favourite trick of the scammers is an old fashioned email where they try to get you interested in an unbelievable bargain. The key word in the last sentence is ‘unbelievable’ because if it looks unbelievable, then it probably is.

Do not click on these emails. Buy only from retailers you know. Buy from big brand names and local retailers who you have a personal relationship with.

Also look for small amounts taken from your credit card over the next weeks. Scammers will put through a small amount to check if it goes through ok and sometime later will hit your credit card with a large amount.

Stay alert and just before you enter any credit card details into a website, take a moment to reflect on anything you may be uncertain about. If you feel any nagging uncertainty, do not go ahead with the purchase.
